Nvidia's ascent to a $5.4 trillion valuation is a story of technological dominance, but the company's latest chapter is written in financial engineering. The chipmaker is no longer just selling GPUs; it is financing the very ecosystem that buys them. This has led analysts and critics alike to dub Nvidia the "central bank of AI," a moniker that reflects its growing influence over the industry's capital flows.
The Economist's latest briefing highlights how CEO Jensen Huang has resorted to creative financing to boost demand. From a $105 billion backstop for an Ohio data centre to a $500 billion investment partnership with Wall Street firms, Nvidia is underwriting the AI buildout in unprecedented ways. But this strategy carries significant risks, drawing comparisons to the dotcom-era lending practices of Cisco and Lucent.
The "Balance Sheet as a Service" Strategy
Morgan Stanley has coined the term "balance-sheet-as-a-service" to describe Nvidia's approach. The company provides guarantees, extends trade credit, and takes equity stakes in startups that buy its chips. This web of financial commitments has grown to over $300 billion in potential liabilities, according to The Economist's analysis.
Nvidia's financial support takes several forms:
- Equity investments: Over $70 billion pledged in startups, with nearly 90 deals last year.
- Guarantees and backstops: Up to $105 billion for OpenAI's data centre, $125 billion through the Wall Street partnership.
- Trade credit: Allowing customers to delay payments for up to a year, with accounts receivable at $63.1 billion.
This strategy narrows the borrowing cost gap between hyperscalers and cash-strapped neoclouds, making it easier for smaller players to build AI infrastructure. But it also entangles Nvidia in the financial health of its customers.
Why Nvidia Needs to Be the Bank
Nvidia's pivot to financing is partly defensive. Its biggest customers—Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft—are designing their own custom chips, which are cheaper and sometimes better suited to specific tasks. Custom chips could account for 50% of the AI processor market by 2030, up from 40% today, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.
To maintain its dominance, Nvidia must ensure a steady stream of demand. By financing neoclouds and AI labs, it creates a captive market for its GPUs. The company's CUDA software ecosystem acts as a "reserve currency," locking in developers and making it harder for rivals to compete, despite AMD's competitive hardware.
The Dotcom Echo: Risks and Rewards
Critics like Michael Burry, who bet against mortgage-backed securities in 2008, warn that Nvidia's guarantees could lead to massive losses if AI demand disappoints. The scenario is reminiscent of the late 1990s, when Cisco and Lucent lent billions to telecoms that later collapsed, leaving the equipment makers with huge write-downs.
Nvidia's commitments are spread over many years, and its strong cash position—$99 billion in cash and securities, with $200 billion in annual cash generation—provides a buffer. But if demand growth merely slows, the backstops could trigger, forcing Nvidia to buy unused compute or cover price shortfalls. SemiAnalysis estimates Nvidia's exposure from its neocloud programme alone could reach $175 billion by 2028.
Will the Loans Prove Sound?
The central question is whether Nvidia's chips will retain their value. Jensen Huang argues they are durable assets, with software upgrades extending their usefulness. Older chips like the A100 are still in demand, and rental prices for the H100 have only dropped 10% since launch. However, this resilience may be an artefact of scarcity, and Nvidia's yearly new releases are designed to supersede older models.
If AI compute prices fall as supply increases, Nvidia's gross margins—currently around 75%—could compress. The company is betting that demand will keep pace, but as one analyst noted, Nvidia is walking a fine line between "enabling demand" and "creating it." The more of the boom Nvidia finances, the more it will bear in a bust.
For now, Nvidia's financial engineering is fueling the AI revolution, but the central bank of AI may be taking on risks that even it cannot fully control. Investors should watch closely as this experiment unfolds.
